About the Unit

The Guidance and Counselling unit is an integral component of the educational mission of the school. The unit develops and provides range of services and programs for the personal/social, educational, and career development of all students. One of the purposes of the unit is to help the individual in becoming a useful member of society. If an individual receives education without proper guidance and counseling, he is not able to develop his personality fully.

Aims and Objectives of Counseling

The counseling unit aims at helping the clients understand and accept themselves “as they are”, and counseling is to help the student understand themselves. The main objective of counseling is to bring about a voluntary change in the client. For this purpose, the counselor provides facilities to help achieve the desired change or make the suitable choice.

Educational Guidance

1. Educational guidance helps students to choose suitable courses and activities according to their abilities and interests keeping in view to their admission for higher secondary schools, junior colleges, vocational institutions in order to receive employment and better social and cultural life.

2. Educational guidance makes acquainted the students with the new purposes of education in relation to nature, type, role and scope of education considering suitable employment, good leadership and better individual as well as social life.

Personal Guidance

Personal guidance is a key part of the school guidance programme. This can range from brief interventions, once-off meetings, to regular meetings with students either on an individual or group basis. Such interactions may be part of the developmental learning processes of students but may also result from students' personal crisis. Personal guidance may include personal counselling, educational counselling, career counselling or a combination of these. The counselor draws different theories of counselling and engage in an eclectic counselling approach.

Vocational Guidance

This is one which is especially pertinent at senior cycle and the ways in which the Guidance Counsellor fulfils this role include:

  • 1. Scholarship opportunities available to the year 12 students
  • 2. Registration for IELTS and SAT exams
  • 3. Administering vocational Interest inventory, to determine students’ career pathways
  • 4. Subject Selection with the year 10 students
  • 5. The Guidance Counsellor is available at Parent/Teacher meetings.
  • 6. Follow up meetings and telephone conversations concerning career issues between the Guidance Counsellor, students and parents as required.
  • 7. Career Day  Visiting speakers from different universities

The unit works in conjunction with the students, the parents/guardians, the management and the staff of the school. It is through a collaborative approach that students experiencing difficulties will be given the necessary support to optimise their learning.
The role of the Guidance Counsellor is one which is formative, informative and consultative. It helps direct and develop students' capacity to become self-directed and independent learners, equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions.

Counseling Goals

a. The goal of the counseling unit is to help individuals overcome their immediate problems and also to equip them to meet future problems.

b. To promote the personal/social development of students in a safe, inclusive learning environment. Counseling is specific for each client since it involves unique problems and expectations.

c. To provide a foundation for students to understand their interests, abilities and challenges

Mentorship program

The unit has a mentorship program in place where all students are assigned school parents to help them with their educational and personal socio-problems.

Community Work

Students demonstrate their social responsibilities by engaging in activities to support and develop their local communities.

Departmental Activities

  • 1. Conducts Orientation program for both new and old students
  • 2. Induction program for new students
  • 3. Conducts a comprehensive career fairs
  • 4. Organizes College / University seminars and talks

Alongside their studies, students get involved in other programmes that enhance their learning and expose them to numerous non-academic activities in order to provide them with the needed life skills for college and beyond.
